Our history;
MFS was established almost 50 years ago when Morpeth and the surrounding area became much more populous and it was feared that many of the local Public Footpaths may be lost to expanding housing development. Around the same time, concerns about the rising cost of fuel affecting peoples ability to enjoy the world beyond their local area were also looming. Thoughts turned to forming a walking group to resist the encroachment onto footpaths and ensure they could be enjoyed for years to come.
An open meeting was advertised via the local newspaper the Morpeth Herald by Tony Shirley, Bruce Robson and Tony Richardson, all founder members, requesting expressions of interest informing a walking group. Around 50 or so people attending and from their a committee was formed, a constitution agreed and an affiliation to the Ramblers Association formed.
Since that time our membership has continued to grow, our walks more varied and further afield taking in the Lake District and Scottish Borders, we enjoy long walks at weekends and shorter summer evening walks as well as several social get togethers over the year.
In 2014, our 40th year a commemorative bench with plaque was purchased and sited outside the Morpeth Leisure Centre for use by all who pass it.
Almost 50 years have passed since that first meeting but the Society remains much as it was; for and on behalf of its members, arranging walks and enjoying the countryside.
